Marathi Wedding Traditions: What to Know Before the Big Day

Marathi weddings blend deep-rooted Vedic traditions with Maharashtra's specific cultural identity. Whether you're preparing for your own Marathi wedding or helping your family plan, understanding the key rituals and their significance helps the process feel purposeful rather than overwhelming.

Pre-Wedding Rituals

Sakhar Puda (Engagement)

The formal engagement ceremony where the groom's family brings a sugar (sakhar) packet to the bride's home — symbolizing the sweetness of the forthcoming union. This is traditionally the first formal family meeting after match finalization. A small puja is performed and the couple exchanges rings.

Kelvan (Family Feast Invitation)

Each family hosts a Kelvan — a formal dinner inviting close relatives and community members, formally announcing the upcoming marriage. This functions as the extended family's introduction to the match.

Haldi Ceremony

Turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom separately at their respective homes — traditionally believed to cleanse and bless the skin before the wedding. A joyful, informal family occasion.

Sanyacha Vivah

A symbolic marriage of the bride to the sacred Tulsi plant (basil), performed before the main wedding. Specific to Brahmin Marathi traditions.

Wedding Day Rituals

Muhurta (Auspicious Timing)

The wedding ceremony time is determined by a Jyotishi (astrologer) based on the birth charts of both partners, selecting an auspicious planetary alignment. This is considered among the most important decisions in the wedding planning process.

Antarpat

A cloth screen is held between the bride and groom as they stand facing each other. The Mangalashtak (eight sacred verses) are recited, and the screen is dropped at the most auspicious moment — the official moment of marriage.

Saptapadi

The seven steps around the sacred fire — each step representing a vow. The groom leads the bride through the seven pheras, the binding ceremony of Hindu marriage.
